Music and Meaning: Poetic Tools for Every Writer

  • Richardson Public Library 2360 Campbell Creek Boulevard Richardson, TX, 75082 United States (map)

What does poetry have to do with the novelist, the memoirist, or the nonfiction writer?

Register here for Zoom - you will receive a link and a calendar invitation.

This discussion will focus on two poetic tools that every author can use: musicality and symbolism. If you have ever written a phrase and thought, “this means what I want it to mean, but it doesn’t sound the way I want it to sound,” you have wrestled with musicality; and if you have ever used imagery that carries meaning beyond the literal, you have worked with symbolism. We will explore how various poets have thought about and used these techniques, how to recognize and appreciate them, and how to incorporate them into our own writing.

Colin Deay is a poet, pastor, and musician living in Richardson, TX. His poetry often reflects on matters of nature, struggle, and spirituality. Colin often draws on his backgrounds in music (BM from the Eastman School of Music) and theology (M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary) in his writing, creating poetry that is careful, musical, and curious.

The Writers Guild of Texas presents Guest Speaker / Program meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month in person at the Richardson Public Library and via Zoom. Visitors are welcome to attend.
